The accident is understood to have happened on Thursday evening at approximately 6.30pm near the village of Ballyheane, which is outside Castlebar.

Both An Garda Síochána and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) are investigating the death.

The man’s body has been removed to Mayo University hospital where a post-mortem will be carried out.

This death brings to 17 the number of deaths on Irish farms so far this year. It is also the second farm-related death this week.

On Tuesday, Co Wexford farmer Martin Kehoe junior died after he was overcome by fumes in a molasses tank.
