There was a fantastic yard of forward store cattle at the annual store show and sale in Bandon, Co Cork this week. Mart manager Tom McCarthy said there was upwards of 700 cattle on offer.
“Trade wise things were holding well, with some of the store prices ahead of factory prices.
“We were celebrating the 60th anniversary of the mart being here in Bandon at this year’s store show and sale.
“We’d have a good reputation for being able to get a lot of year and a half old Friesian, Angus and Hereford cattle weighing 500kg plus and that could be seen today.”
Bullocks
In the bullock sale, practically all of the 500 bullocks on offer were forward stores.
Friesians made from €280 up to €540/kg with mainly 2016-born stock presented for sale. Most sold for between €1.60/kg and €1.75/kg with exceptions over and under this price range.

These March 2016-born bullocks weighed an average of 490kg and sold for €980 (€2/kg).
Angus and Herefords made up to €800, selling from €1.70/kg for crosses showing a lot of dairy influence up to €2/kg for better grading stock.
There was a larger selection of Continentals than usual and they made from €450 up to €800.
Most Continentals made from €2.05/kg up to €2.46/kg.

These January 2015-born bullocks weighed an average 701kg and sold for €1,470 (€2.10/kg).

These January 2016-born bullocks weighed an average of 514kg and sold for €975 (€1.90/kg).

Cows were in shorter supply, with more fleshed cows on offer partly because of the show and sale. The price range for cows was from €500 to €900.
One Friesian, 935kg – €1,580, €1.69/kg.One Hereford, 640kg – €1,050, €1.64/kg.One Charolais, 775kg – €1,350, €1.74/kg.One Simmental, 805kg – €1,300, €1.62/kg.One Friesian, 725kg – €1,080,€1.49/kg.Heifers
There was also 150 heifers on offer and they made between €450 and €1,200.
