A similar situation unfolded in the general sale in Athenry on Tuesday 9 July as was reported pn in Birr on Monday 8 July – a small showing of heifers backed up by reduced prices and an easing in prices for light bullocks, but heavier males held firm.

Bullocks and bulls

Table 1 gives a full breakdown of bullock prices.

Prices for 400kg to 500kg bullocks came in at an average of €1.83/kg.

Looking across the breeds, Friesians put a floor under the trade at prices of €1.32/kg to €1.55/kg.

Hereford-, Shorthorn- and Angus-cross bullocks made up the middle ground and sold for €1.65/kg to €2.05/kg.

The best continental lot in this weight category was a pen of 495kg 14-month-old Charolais bullocks, which made €2.40/kg or €1,190/head. All continentals sold for above €1.90/kg.

Males in the 500kg to 600kg weight bracket averaged €1.94/kg.

Heifers

There was a smaller entry of heifers on Tuesday and these met with a more difficult trade.

Table 2 gives a breakdown of heifer and cow prices.

Heifers from 400kg to 500kg averaged €1.85/kg.

Better-quality lots commanded prices of €2.15/kg and above, while many plainer lots settled for a price below €1.60/kg.

Heavy heifers from 500kg to 600kg averaged €1.69/kg, which was back 5c/kg from the week previous.

Picking out the best quality would give you an average of over €2/kg, while the plainer types fell down below €1.30/kg.

Cows

There was a good number of cows sold at the sale.

Dairy cows sold from €1/kg up to a top price of €1.40/kg for better-conditioned lots.

On a per-head basis, the hammer fell at between €700 and €1,050 per head for the vast majority.

Continental cows started at €1.40/kg up to €1.75/kg. That works out at a range of €975 to €1,400 per head for most.

Top cow price went to a 2010-born 800kg Limousin-cross cow, which sold for €1,405 (€1.76/kg).
