Ireland goes to the polls on Friday, 23 May to elect our MEPs. To many people though, the European Parliament seems like a distant and arcane body. But did you know that the EU Parliament has the power to effect everything from taking climate action and creating a more just tax system to meeting overseas aid commitments at a pan-European level? In other words: your vote really does count.
But, are you fully prepared to cast it?
To help you make up your mind, The Wheel (the umbrella body for community and voluntary organisations) has arranged a series of European election hustings across Ireland for the coming weeks and Macra is encouraging members to attend. This is your chance to meet with and question your MEP candidates directly on the social, economic and environmental issues that matter most to you.
All declared MEP candidates will speak at the hustings, and those confirmed so far include: Eamon Ryan, Paul Murphy, Mairead McGuinness, Marian Harkin, Ronan Mullen, Phil Prendergast, Diarmuid O’Flynn, Thomas Byrne, Lorraine Higgins and Lynn Boylan. More confirmations are coming in every day.
