A ban on one-off rural housing has been ruled out by Minister of State for Planning and Local Government Peter Burke.

He told Irish Country Living one-off rural housing will be accommodated under proposed rural housing guidelines.

“I am very clear in debunking all the myths that one-off rural housing is being banned. It absolutely is not,” he said.

If brought in, the guidelines will accommodate one-off rural housing for those who have “an economic or social reason to reside or build on their own land”, Minister Burke added.

He would not comment on whether farmers are to be specifically mentioned in the proposed guidelines or if any specific provisions are to be put in place for them.
