Dale Farm, the largest dairy company in NI, has won a major piece of business with supermarket chain Lidl, becoming its main supplier of cheddar globally.

Up to this point, Dale Farm supplied cheddar to Lidl in the UK market.

In total, Lidl currently has 5% of the UK grocery market, with over 700 stores. Along with Aldi, it shares the title of the UK’s fastest-growing supermarket retailer.

However, Lidl is also a big player on the continent, and recently expanded into the US. The deal with Dale Farm will see cheese from its Dunmanbridge factory available in an estimated 8,000 stores across the UK, Europe and the US.

The cheddar range will go on-shelf in Lidl Ireland under the supermarket’s ‘‘Rathdaragh’’ own-brand, in the UK and Europe as ‘‘Valley Spire’’ and ‘‘Milbona’’, and in the US as ‘‘Preferred Selection’’.

While the value of the contract, the length, and the actual volumes involved have not been revealed, it is understood to be significant. It is the single biggest contract awarded by Lidl to a NI agri-food company, and probably the biggest contract ever won by a NI dairy company.
