Fresh-calved heifers to 4,100gns at Dungannon

Demand remained steady for dairy stock at the 80th Dungannon dairy sale by Taaffe auctions last Thursday, with a top price paid of 4,100gns.

Leading the trade was Ards Has It All Ruth (PLI £336), a fresh-calved heifer yielding 34l, from the Patton family, Newtownards.

Farnear Delta-Lambda daughters continued to be in high demand throughout the sale, with the overall champion, the February 2023-born Relough Lambda Danna 46 (PLI £396), making the second highest price of 3,800gns. This animal, from the McLean family, Donaghmore, calved in early August and is yielding 41l.

The McLean’s also topped the cow trade at 3,600gns, paid for Relough Applaud Crimson 8 (PLI £519). This young second-calver, sired by Boghill Glamour Applaud, gave 9,179kgs at 4.34% butterfat and 3.3% protein in her first lactation.

Across the sale, fresh-calved heifers averaged 2,713gns for 129 sold, while cows averaged 2,775gns for the 19 sold. Springing heifers averaged 1,750gns, with bulling heifers at 1,607gns.
