Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn breeds held their April shows and sales at Dungannon Farmers Mart on Friday. Demand for both Angus and Hereford bulls was brisk, as the two Shorthorns on offer failed to meet their reserve.

The highest price of the day was paid for the Angus bull Ballyvaston Edwin B306, bred and exhibited by the Strain family from Co Down.

A son of Rawburn E-Type, this January 2025-born bull is out of a Linton Gilbertines Dubliner-bred cow.

In the top 40% of the breed for calving ease and replacement, judge Robin Lamb awarded the young bull the overall champion in the pre-sale show, before he went on to top the sale, selling for 5,200gns (€6,265) to Alex Lowe.

Home Farm Euro was next best in the Angus at 4,800gns (€5,783) for Fermanagh breeder, Fintan Keown.

Just 13-months-old, this powerful young bull is a son of Dillon New Holland and Home Farm Ruby W511, a Knockmountagh Robert-sired cow going back to the Clooncarne herd.

Although below breed average on most traits, he was the pick of John Ramsey. Overall, nine out of the 11 Angus bulls in the yard sold to an average of 4,155gns (€5,005).

Hereford

In the Hereford section, 10 out of the 11 bulls on offer exchanged hands, retailing to an average of 3,810gns (€4,589).

Heading up the prices at 4,800gns (€5,783) was Heather King with Somerville 1 Bandit.

Sired by Fabb 1 Northern Star, this rising two-year-old bulls mother is daughter of Solpoll 1 Pounder. As well as displaying a fantastic set of figures, he also picked up the overall Hereford championship earlier that day, before selling to Jim and Ann Henning.

John McMordie of the well-known Solpoll herd achieved the second highest price of 4,600gns (€5,542), as Geer Watson and family claimed the reserve overall champion with Barnburn 1 Cola who went on to sell for 4,200gns (€5,060).
