A small, select group of Charolais bulls went for auction in Friday’s show and sale at Swatragh Livestock Mart. Buyers were also selective with their purchases, with 16 bulls exchanging hands on the night, resulting in a 62% clearance.

The bulls that did sell averaged 4,948gns (€6,000), with a top price of 8,000gns (€9,703) for the overall champion, Fury Aero.

Bred and exhibited by Pat Hackett from Co Tyrone, this January 2025-born bull is a son of the Irish-bred AI sire, Cloonglasna11 Socks ET.

A double carrier of the F94L gene, Aero goes back to a long line of Fury females, combining Nelson and Fury Merchant.

Although well below the breed average for a number of traits, this classy, soft-fleshed bull was the pick of judge Harold Stubbs for overall champion and ultimately his purchaser, Tommy Whiteside.

Goldies Carnival son

Niall Cameron’s first prize winner Shivey Archie ET was up next at 6,200gns (€7,520). One of the younger lots on the day at just 14 months old, this powerful young bull is a son of Goldies Carnival and Coolnaslee Lucylu, a Maerdy Fiend daughter. Acquiring this double F94L carrier was Alister McMullan.

Antrim breeder William Whyte received a call of 5,100gns (€6,186) for his red rosette winner, Innisrush Voldermont.

December 2024-born, this Goldies Icon son is out of a Stranagone Jones bred dam and came with a single copy of the profit gene.

Ranking in the top 40% of the breed for terminal and self-replacing indexes, he went home with Brendan Laverty.

Two bulls at 5,000gns

Derryharney Vincent wasn’t far behind at 5,000gns (€6,064), selling to John McCambridge. Bred in Co Fermanagh by Harold Stubbs and Andrew Burleigh, this December 2024-born bull is a son of Derryharney Outstanding and the Newhouse Bigal daughter, Derryharney Pickmeup.

Matching him at the same money was Innisrush Vindaloo, the property of William Whyte. A son of Balthayock Musketeer, this December 2024-born bull goes back to a CF52 bred dam descending from the Edenhurst herd. As well as carrying a single copy of the Q204X gene, he also ranked in the top 20% of the breed for Eye Muscle Area and Gestation.

Females

Just one heifer was on offer on the night, Brownhill Vicky, bred and exhibited by the Devine brothers from Co Tyrone.

Born in November 2024, this stylish young heifer is a daughter of the Irish bred sire, Kilvilcorris Royal and a Edenhurst Cognac bred dam going back to the Deeleview herd.

She found a new abode with Kelly McConnell for 3,000gns (€3,638).
