Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show ensured that the art of showing cattle, whether it be commercial or pedigree, stays alive with their training day for young people on Sunday.

Held at the new venue of Annaharvey Farm just outside Tullamore, the day proved another roaring success.

Future young handlers travelled from far and wide to learn all about preparing animals for summer shows.

They were taught how to wash and clip animals, how to dress them and lead them around a ring, all with the intention of winning at shows around the country, and maybe some day be in with a chance of getting their hands on a gold medal at Tullamore Show.

Demonstrations

Experts in all areas of showing were on hand to teach the young attendees everything they know. Jim Dockery and his team gave a brilliant demonstration on breaking cattle for showing, as well as covering all aspects of halter making and health and safety.

Alan Gibbons and Billy Dunne covered all aspects of clipping, grooming and preparing an animal for the show ring, which was kindly provided by David Wharton.

Belgian Blue breeder Tommy Fitzgerald was also on hand to give some detailed advise on show ring etiquette.

In the dairy section, Martina Neville, Aisling Neville, Emer Kelly, Enda Neville and Mary Conroy provided guidance on stock judging and showmanship.

Hospitality

Attendees, both young and old, enjoyed tea and sandwiches supplied by Brophils Butchers, delicious cupcakes supplied by ABP, not to mention the food from Supermacs, sponsored by Tullamore Show, which went down a treat.

Amanda Dunne, manager of the Tullamore FBD Office, said: “The future of handling is in safe hands with the massive turnout and interest in today’s training day. I commend and thank Tullamore Show for hosting such a magnificent event.”

John Keena, Tullamore Show chairperson added: “I would like to thank the Deverell family for providing such a perfect venue. It has been great to see such a turnout of stock and young people eager to learn. Hopefully we will see them all at some stage on the show circuit during the show season.

“Thanks to everyone who contributed in any way to making it such a success.” He concluded by welcoming everyone to the Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show in Butterfield Estate on Sunday 9 August.

Future stars

For the second year in a row, future stars of the show ring joined the event, showcasing the next generation in agriculture and top-quality young breeders, as well as giving breeders the chance to show some of the lesser-known breeds.

Salers, Simmental, Dexter, Blonde D’Aquitaine and Irish Moiled Cattle were all in attendance. Tasked with judging the cattle on the day were experienced show men, Garrett Behan and Trevor Chadwick.

Blonde D’Aquitaine

Both champion and reserve in the Blonde section went to Diarmuid and Paudie Finnan of the Lattin herd. Taking home the number one prize was Lattin Ugo 2, an August 2025 born bull calf sired by Hallfield Plato. He pipped his comrade Lattin Una into reserve, an August 2025 born daughter of NCBC’s AI sire, Hashtag.

Simmental

Top spot in the Simmental went the way of Deerview Tiffany Queen ET from Cian Martin. This September 2025-born heifer is a daughter of the legendary Raceview King. In reserve was Maria Walsh with Ballyk Top Notch P, an August 2025 born bull calf sired by Coose Lincoln ET.

Salers

John Burke achieved the double in the Salers, claiming both champion and reserve with Manusmore Elliot Icare and Manusmore Elite Icare, two promising young calves bred from Bullbank’s AI sire, Icare.

Dexter

Siobhan and Mike O’Connor struck gold when they were awarded the overall champion Dexter with Riverside Dolly and her calf at foot. Standing next to her in reserve was Felicity McGrath’s young female, Creagh Beatrice.

Irish Moiled

Meanwhile, Shannon and Aine Hyland clinched both champion and reserve champion accolades in the Irish Moiled ring with Lisnolan Blaithin and Lisnolan George.
