Following on from its premier show and sale in Tullamore last week, the Irish Hereford Breed Society held its second autumn bull sale in Golden Vale Mart, Kilmallock, on Friday 17 October.
A smaller than cataloged entry saw 27 bulls put forward for sale, with only 16 trading to average €4,275.
Auctioneer Eamonn Gaffney got the crowd going when Michael O'Keeffe's Gurteragh Conor 1136 PH hit the market at €6,200.
A third-prizewinner in his class, the Cork-bred bull had all the stars in the world across terminal and replacement indexes, coupled with below-average calving figures.
A son of Mullaghdoopoll 1 Finnian and a homebred dam by Gurteragh Oakley 652, this March 2024-born bull was bought by a Westmeath farmer.
Rebel County
Also hailing from the Rebel County was Tony Hartnett, who received the next-highest price of €5,200 for the full-horned bull Riverrock Hunter HH.
Born in April 2024, this high-index son of Grianan Wildfire goes back to a Gageboro Morgan-bred dam and was the pick of a Cork dairy farmer.
Droumdaniel Thunder HH was knocked down at €5,000 selling to a herd in the east of the country.
Exhibited by Cork breeder Eugene Lynch, this 19-month-old son of Balleen Powerplay picked up the reserve champion in the pre-sale show and comes from a dam line consisting of Brocca Kieran and Allowdale Exceller.
Michael O'Keeffe capped off a productive day, as he parted company with Gurteragh Majestic 1129 PH for a sum of €4,700.
A heterozygous polled bull, Majestic is sired by the herd's successful stock bull Mullaghdoopoll 1 Finnian.
Judge Nigel Heatrick found his overall champion in the April 2024-born Astellas Hurler 1 PH, the property of Kathleen Stokes from Co Cork.
Despite being low on stars, this Churchcrosspoll 1 Hurler-bred bull found a new abode in Co Meath for €4,600.
