Thymm Angus based in the Alentejo region of Portugal will host this year's Portuguese Aberdeen Angus Association National Open Day on Friday 9 October.

It's possibly the most important and biggest event on the Angus Association's calendar, with breeders attending from all over Portugal and Spain.

The pedigree herd was built up over the last three years with imported black and red Angus cattle from 30 different pedigree Irish herds.

Today, the herd comprises approximately 75 pedigree breeding cows with follow-on progeny, of which 67 were sourced as heifers in Ireland. Two of the four stock bulls were also bred in and imported from Ireland.

How these cattle are performing will now be put in the national spotlight, with numerous progeny on the ground for the visitors to see.

'Prestigious event'

Speaking ahead of the open day, the owner of the herd Luis Gomes said: "We are really pleased to be hosting the most prestigious Angus event in Portugal. There will be over 150 Angus cattle on display, all descending from Irish genetics.

"We would be delighted if as many Irish breeders as possible could join us on the day to see the results of our investments in Ireland."
