It was Irish genetics to the fore at the recent British Hereford Cattle Society show and sale in Shrewsbury.

Winning the overall junior and supreme male championship was Coley 1 Condor, exhibited by Miss H Whittaker, Halifax.

Born in January 2025, Coley is Irish-bred on both sides of his pedigree, sired by Gouldingpoll 1 Gold Spice and out of Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 916, both bred by Matthew Goulding from Co Kerry.

Gold Spice sold privately to Cogent in 2018, while Gouldingpoll 1 Duchess 916 was purchased at the Goulding Opportunity Sale in 2019, before going on to claim the reserve supreme championship at the Royal Highland Show in 2022.

Although ranking in the bottom 5% of the breed for calving, Coley sits in the top 20% of the breed for a number of key terminal traits.

Judge George Harvey praised the polled bull’s style and correctness, awarding him top honours after winning the largest class of the day. He later sold for the highest price of 6,000gns (€7,272) to M Voss.

Overall, bulls sold to an average of £4,432 (€5,116), while heifers averaged £3,192 (€3,684).
