Despite over 170 bulls going for auction in the final two Limousin society spring sales, the clearance rate remained high in Roscommon, with 85% of animals through the ring finding new homes.

A larger-than-usual entry and the Roscrea premier earlier in the week meant averages for both males and females in Roscommon were down slightly on that of last year’s sale. Averages came in at €2,870 and €1,894 respectively, with a price range of €2,000 to €5,400 for bulls and €1,500 to €2,900 for heifers.

Topping the sale at €5,400 was the pre-sale junior champion Quilty Limousins Kingpin. Bred by Martin McGannon, Ennis, Co Clare, Kingpin is sired by Cloughhead Umpire and is the first calf of Bohomore Hadia B, a Nenuphar daughter with Sympa and the renowned donor cow Nadia B in his lineage.

Anthony Leonard’s 13-month-old first-prize winner Clydagh Kieran secured €3,900. Boasting five stars for most traits, Ampertaine Foreman was again behind this one.

Senior champion of the day under judge John Connell, Oldcastle, Co Meath, was Aloor Jupitor. Bred by Patsy Creighton, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, Jupitor is sired by Fieldson Alfy, with Ferry and Golfeur in the back breeding. Combing five stars for most traits with a muscle score of 114, he was acquired by Raymond Lee from Elphin, Co Roscommon, for €3,550.

Drummin Kenny, an embryo son of Dinmore Goldcrest and Drummin Cliona, was next in the money for John McInerney. This first-prize winner made €3,500 for John Brennan, Castlebaldwin, Co Sligo.

Reserve senior champion Ashbrook Jacko, by Fieldson Alfy, left the ring unsold. Jacko was bred by Michael Hanlon, Dring, Co Longford.
