The Irish Angus Munster branch held the last of its spring sales on Saturday 13 May in Kilmallock Mart. This was the first year the branch went with three sales in Kilmallock due to the large entries witnessed in previous years.

This sale marked the lowest number forward of the three, with 32 bulls present. In total, 24 found new homes, representing a clearance rate of 75% to average €2,350. This was back €50 on the year, with 10 fewer bulls sold.

Judge was John Appelbe of the Carrigroe herd and he found his champion in the form of Greeenvalley Nathaniel. Bred by Patrick Carmody, Ballybunion, this February 2016-born son of Mogeely Joe sold for the second-top price of €3,300.

The reserve championship was awarded to Knockanthbrien Noel from the herd of Con Quinn, Annacarthy, Co Tipperary. Sired by Ballymagrine Wonder and out of a Cheeklaw Eirwyn-bred cow, Noel later sold for €3,100.

Securing the top price of €3,650 was Ballycasey Ned from the herd of John Hayes, Kildimo, Co Limerick. This January 2016-born bull was sired by noted easy-calving bull Cornamuckla Lord Hardy, who has bred a number of top-priced bulls throughout the south in recent months.

Thomas Finucane, Kilflynn, Co Kerry, realised €2,700 for Keel Malcolm, sired by Goulding Jumbo King.

Selling at €2,650 was Denis Twomey’s Tubridmore Napoleon. This bull was sired by Rawburn Rommel and out of the well-known show cow Luddenmore Rosa Erica.

John Hayes was back in the money again when he sold his Mogeely Joe son Ballcasey Nod for €2,600. Matching him at the price tag was Patrick Pender, Kilmihil, Clare, with Cahermurphy Magnet. This 22-month-old bull was sired by Westellen Diego and out of homebred cow Cahermurphy Deirdre.
