As has been the case all year, Limousin bulls were in hot demand at the Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society's sale in Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday.

Despite Angus making up over 70% of the entries, all eyes were on the Limousin as seven bulls sold to an average of €6,528.

As well as achieving the highest average across all breeds, the two highest prices of the day also went the way of Limousin bulls, as Lisdadnan Adam sold for highest price of €8,100.

A son of Brontemoor Salering out of a Loyal bred dam, this young February 2025-born bull carries a four-star replacement index of €116 and two copies of the F94L gene.

Bred and exhibited by Helen Faughnan from Co Leitrim, he will now join John Kiernan's suckler herd in Co Longford.

Lisdadnan Adam selling for €8,100

Selling at €7,300 was Gortnaskeagh Alan from Leitrim breeder, Oliver O'Hara. Sired by Carrowreagh United going back to Loyal and Fieldson Alfy, this young 14-month-old bull displayed an almost perfect set of indexes, ranking in the top 20% of the breed for replacement, terminal and dairy-beef.

Taking him back to Tulsk in Co Roscommon was suckler farmer, Patrick Filan.

Angus

It was a case of supply exceeding demand in the Angus section, as 46 bulls averaged €3,715. It must be said there was more appetite for the younger Angus bulls with the trade improving as the sale went on.

Leading the prices for Angus bulls was Laheens Bullbank ET at €6,600, the property of Cathal and Cormac Duignan from Co Leitrim.

A son of the UK powerhouse Elliot Bravo out of a Weeton Diamond Mine bred dam, this February 2025-born bull boasted some massive terminal figures, ranking in the top 20% of the breed for dairy-beef and carcase weight. Securing Bullbank for his establishment in Co Sligo was Raymond Williams.

Trading at €5,400 was Ballygart Alfie brought out by Leitrim breeder, Liam Moreton. A son of HW Farghal and a Rawburn Jumbo Eric bred cow, this December 2024-born bull offered buyers four-star terminal and dairy-beef indexes as well as below average calving figures across beef and dairy. He was knocked down to John McDonnell from Ballinasloe in Co Galway.

Also hitting €5,400 was Cathal and Joe McCormack's January 2025-born bull, Steil Becker. A son of the herds former stock bull, Ernehill Rum, his dam Steil S Winnie is a daughter of Mogeely Joe.

In the top 20% of the breed for replacement and calving ease, he was the pick of Patrick McCarthy for his pedigree herd in Co Cork.

The Mulligan family from Dromod in Co Leitrim parted company with Clooncarne Beckham for €4,800.

A super stylish son of the herds stock bull, Knockmountagh Robert, this young 13-month-old bull was curtailed on stars, carrying just a two-star replacement index and a three star terminal index. One of the last bulls through the ring, this standout lot was the pick of Deelvale Farm in Co Mayo.

Charolais

Seven Charolais bulls found new homes on the day, retailing to an average of €5,085. Leading the prices here was Padraig Jinks from Co Sligo with Tirerrill Apollo at €7,200. Just over 14-months-old, he is a son of Goldstar Ludwig and a Fiston bred dam going back to Cottage Devon.

Offering a staggering five-star terminal index of €189 and a carcase weight figure of 46.6kg, he was one of a small number of animals exported to Northern Ireland on the day.

Bunnymore Valentino selling for €5,800

Local breeder Michael Reynolds was next in line at €5,800 with Bunnymore Valentino. Sired by Doonally New, his dam Bunnymore Ophelia is a daughter of the highly sought after UK sire, Blelack Digger. A single carrier of the F94L gene and possessing four-star terminal and dairy-beef indexes, he was snapped up by John Golden from Co Galway.
