Comment: Chair of the IFA pigs committee Tom Hogan said the Irish pig price remained relatively stable once again this week. Quotes from processors remain settled in the range of €1.64/kg yo €1.68c/kg with the majority of pigs moving into the main export plants at €1.66/kg. While not all pig farmers are getting this price, there are farmers getting more, with €1.70c/kg being paid for smaller consignments of pigs with a tight weight specification. Demand for pork and bacon is expected to increase as schools reopen this week and the holiday season comes to an end. Processors report that average weights have slipped back in recent weeks, coinciding with the use of cereals that have being stored since last harvest. The gradual inclusion of new season cereals in pig feed will inevitably provide a boost to performance and slaughter weights.
