The 2025 national Simmental calf finals, sponsored by Dovea Genetics and Hillcrest Simmentals, will take place at the National Ploughing Championships on Wednesday 17 September at 1pm.

In total, there will be five national classes, two bull and two heifer classes, December/January and February onward, and a special polled class for either polled bulls or heifers born on or after 1 December 2024. These calves will have qualified for these championships through the regional club finals. In addition, calves can also be entered directly.

“For all Simmental enthusiasts and good cattle farmers, Wednesday 17 September is the day to head to the Ploughing,” says breed secretary, Peadar Glennon. “These top-quality Simmental calves will only be at the venue for the Wednesday.”

Breeders and farmers, both suckler and dairy, will get a first-hand opportunity to see the quality of young animals coming forward for sale in the coming months. In fact, some of the calves participating in these national finals will be for sale at the society’s premier sale in Roscommon on Saturday 25 October.

The Simmental Society’s flagship commercial breeding heifer sale will also take place at Ballymote Mart on Saturday 4 October and at Gort Mart on Wednesday 8 October. The young bulls on display at the Ploughing will highlight exactly the type of bull required to breed these top-end replacement heifers for suckler farmers.

Peadar added: “The message is clear, come to the Ploughing on the Wednesday and see the best Simmental genetics available on display in the show ring at 1pm.

“I must thank our sponsors Dovea Genetics and Hillcrest Simmentals for supporting these national finals and, most of all, the exhibitors who make these competitions possible.”
