The former airfield where food and supplies were landed into during the Berlin Airlift in 1948-1949 saw people return for what could be described as a great German potato giveaway.

Bumper crops last year saw Germany experience a kartoffel flut (potato flood) and Templehofler Feld is one of a number of venues where tonnes of potatoes were given away from free.

People turned up to cart off the kartoffeln in whatever way they could.

The operation dubbed “4,000 tonnes” came about after a potato farmer near Leipzig saw a sale fall through at short notice.

Rather than send them to landfill or for biogas, he decided to have them dropped at 174 distribution points throughout Berlin.
