IFA hill chair Pat Dunne is urging the NPWS and Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs to uphold the grazing rights of the 40 farmers affected by the sale.

He says the grazing rights of these farmers must be respected and not altered in any way.

Dunne goes on to say that the main concern is to ensure the “continuation of farming and the ability of farmers to qualify for various CAP payments”.

Market price

The land package was taken into ownership by NAMA a number of years ago and has a market asking price of €2.5m.

It is expected, however, that the Government would purchase the land for a smaller figure.

Department’s comment

A spokesperson for the Department confirmed to the Irish Farmers Journal this week that the sale of the land is still in the finalisation process and when the sale is complete it will “engage, in its capacity as the owner of the property, with any holders of grazing”.

The Department also said it will not be revealing the selling price of the land at present, but will do so in due course.

The sale of the land, known locally as the Featherbeds, would see the park come under public ownership and expand the parkland to over 22,000 acres.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service will manage the newly acquired parkland on behalf of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
