The Dealer heard that while the 2027 IFA presidential election is a bit off still, there were whisperings about who might put their name on the ballot at an event marking the 60th anniversary of the start of the 1966 Farmers’ Rights March in Bantry, Co Cork, last Saturday.
TJ Maher’s presence could be a signal of his intent. He’s currently not on IFA council but he was spotted at the CAP meeting in Athy recently.
Munster regional chair Conor O’Leary and north Cork chair Pat O’Keeffe were also in Bantry and their names are being bandied around for the top job.
Elsewhere, I noted national treasurer Patrick McCormick had a very busy Ploughing. Following his sojourn in Bord Bia headquarters earlier this year, he was again prominent at the IFA protest outside Sole restaurant on Friday.
Almost a year away, it will be interesting to see who keeps up the pace ahead of formal declaration.
