Will all the recent talk of an equine slaughter plant getting the green light spark another spike in the value of horses that are heading for the knackery?
This question was put to The Dealer recently following an article in this publication which confirmed that the Department of Agriculture had received a number of applications to open such a facility.
Last summer the price of old and broken-down horses surged on the back of speculation that a factory was on the cusp of opening to take such animals.
Horses that were struggling to make €100 earlier in the year, made in excess of €500 a head at some fairs last summer in the expectation that an Irish horse slaughter plant was on the cards.
Twelve months later and we are back in a similar situation. The Dealer will be watching developments with interest.
