DEAR SIR: In recent weeks I have been trimming trees for timber and was gathering tops only to be informed that I now require a permit for the burning of “agricultural green waste”.

I understand the need to regulate burning of course, but I do begrudge paying a fee for what is essentially a rubber stamp. I looked further into the application and began to take issue with this new system.

I was asked to pick a day five days in advance to burn.

With our unpredictable weather, it is rare that we can see so far ahead. The council has thought of this – they can give an extension if it rains on the day if you ring them to tell them it is raining or that burning cannot take place for another reason.

This attitude shows a lack of sense or understanding from the so-called environmental department of the council.

The fee is extortionate for what I’m getting and I was unable to get an answer when asked where it would go. Where will this all end – slurry permits for under-pressure farmers needing to empty tanks?
