In the dairy section, it was the spring 2015-born heifer calf Wonder 1045, exhibited by Sean Ryan, Doon, Co Limerick, who was tapped forward as the winner of the best dairy heifer class. This stylish young calf then went on to take top honours as dairy champion later in the day.

In the beef section, no individual breed championships were awarded. Instead, each first-prize class winner was invited to compete for the supreme beef inter-breed champion of the show. Subsequently, nine top-quality exhibits from the Hereford, Aberdeen Angus, Limousin and commercial breeds competed for the day’s top accolade for judge, Michael Pat Murphy, Ballydehob, Co Cork.

Emerging triumphant as the inter-breed champion was the famed six-year-old senior stock bull Wedderlie Black Box J935 from Albert and Jennifer DeCogan, Killamuckey, Castlemartyr, Co Cork. This Abberton Mr Bionic G441 son was imported from Scotland some years ago and has compiled a stellar show record in recent months for the DeCogan duo.

The reserve inter-breed beef championship went to Donal Moloney, Roo West, Ardnacrusha, Co Clare, with the senior homebred heifer Ardnacrusha Hilarious. This September 2012-born heifer is sired by Wilodge Vantastic and capped a hugely successful day for the Moloney family, who also won first prize in several of the classes earlier in the show.
