Irish beef processor Dawn Meats has produced its billionth burger for McDonald’s.

The company’s production site at Carroll’s Cross in Waterford now produces more than 400m beef burgers per year for McDonald’s in Ireland, UK and Europe.

Nigel McGuire, director of development and supply chain at McDonald’s said the fast food chain is “a committed supporter of the Irish agri-business sector. We’re proud of the strength of our relationship with Dawn Meats, which has led to one in every five burgers sold in McDonald’s restaurants across Europe being of Irish origin.”

McDonald’s is the single largest purchaser of Irish beef by volume, purchasing approximately 40,000t of Irish beef annually and one in every five hamburgers sold in McDonald’s across Europe every year is of Irish origin.

As a verified member of Origin Green, Dawn Meats processes 100% Quality Assured Irish beef on behalf of McDonald’s sourced directly from Irish farmers who are members of the Bord Bia’s Beef Quality Assurance scheme.

Dawn Meats group commercial director Richard Clinton said the company was “on target to achieve our ambition to produce one beef burger per year for every person in Europe. Active collaboration with McDonald’s across a number of disciplines has resulted in the gains made to date and we look forward to further progress in the years ahead as the McDonald’s Global business grows.”

Dawn Meats was established in Co Waterford in 1980 and has grown to a business with over €1bn in annual revenue, employing 3,300 staff in eight countries.
