I farm: “140ac with my dad, Seamus, older brother, Stephen, and twin brother, Frank.”
Mixed farming: “We supply Kerry Co-op and have 60 dairy cows, as well as 30 sucklers and around 50 weanlings. I’m 24 and I’ve always been interested in farming. I’ve been going to marts from a young age and I’ve always been involved in it.”
Listen to "My farming week: Rose Keating" on Spreaker.
Stock: “We try to keep British Friesians because our land wouldn’t be 100% great and they seem to do better on the rougher ground. We’d like to get more into Limousins, and we’ve actually just got a pedigree Limousin bull, so we’re trying to improve the suckler breeding.”
Day-to-day: “I milk the cows for dad and feed the dairy calves as well or just feed the cattle in general. In summer, I’d go to the marts and sell the cattle for dad or buy some cattle.”
Education: “I just did a law degree in the University of Limerick so I’m hoping I can do part-time farming with it. I’m currently studying to take the FE-1 (entrance examination to the Law Society of Ireland) and I’m hoping to be a solicitor, but I’ll always have cattle.”
Slurry: “The ground is just saturated – even our good fields are wet. I think everyone’s experiencing the same thing but hopefully the rain will stop.”
Fodder: “I’d say we have enough fodder to last till March but we’ve never been like that before. They’re eating a lot and some of them have been in since September. We’re just hoping we’ll get them out by St Patrick’s Day. But we’ll have to start letting them out by then, or else buy fodder in.”
Milk price: “Milk prices have been fairly good, could be a bit better though! Cattle have been fairly OK, so hopefully they’ll hold their own going into the future now.”
Brexit: “I don’t know how Brexit is going to affect the dairy market, but hopefully it will stay at a level that we can keep going and break even and make a bit of money as well. If [the milk price] falls it’s going to be trouble.”
Quotable quote: “My favourite bull would be a Limousin bull, and I have him at home!”
