Scott beat the previous record set by Don King from New Zealand in 2007 by one lamb. The Donegal man began shearing at 5am on Sunday morning and completed five rounds of shearing throughout the day.
Between 5am and 7am, Scott sheared 193, between 7am and 8.45am he sheared 170, between 10.15am and noon 169 were shorn, from 1pm to 2.45pm he put another 169 through his hands and between 3.15pm and 5pm Scott rattled off a final 166 lambs.
Scott, a nine-time Irish champion, had been scheduled to attempt the record on Friday but heavy rain in Cornwall forced the postponement of the event. With clearer skies forecast for Sunday, another attempt at the world record was scheduled.
Scott, from Kilmacrennan in Co. Donegal, needed to shear some 97 sheep every hour in order to break the previous world record of 866 sheep shorn in nine hours.
Scott is no stranger to sheep shearing records. In April of this year, he set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest time to shear a sheep. He completed the world record in 37.9 seconds. Then in June he broke the Irish record for most ewes shorn in nine hours. He sheared a total of 820 sheep beating the previous record of 483.
IFA president and fellow sheep shearer Joe Healy congratulated Scott, describing it as an incredible demonstration of speed and stamina. "Irish farmers, and in particular the sheep farming sector, are immensely proud that 'one of our own' has managed to create a world lamb shear record that should stand the test of time," he said.
