Not since the 1970’s when the Farm Apprenticeship Board was in full activity has there been as many opportunities for young people interested in farming.

A potential career progression or ladder of opportunity is now emerging for any young person interested in farming as a career.

This would include:

  • Those who have or expect to have insufficient land in their own right but would like to make a career out of farming.
  • Those interested in pursuing new farming opportunities while they wait to take over the home farm.
  • To pursue such opportunities the first steps are:

  • Attain an agricultural qualification, there are many excellent agricultural course options: Teagasc Colleges, institutes of technology, universities.
  • Gain hands-on experience from expert farmers, young farmers must develop their life and farming skills. Time spent on good commercial farms stand to those who wish to develop their farming careers.
