Some 1,283 neighbour notifications, also called ‘‘name and shame’’ letters, were issued in 2017 to neighbours of farmers who are retaining persistently infected (PI) calves, figures from the Department of Agriculture show.

This number is up on 2016 levels, when in excess of 300 neighbour notifications were issued.

A Department of Agriculture spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal: “The total number of restriction notices in 2017 amounted to 733, while the number issued in the same period in 2016 amounted to 573.

“According to the latest information available, there are currently only 17 retained PI animals in 24 herds in the country,” he said.
