Just a short walk from the centre of the town, the house is set on a rolling mature parkland estate with frontage along the river Suir.

The grounds are accessed from the public road through a pair of wrought iron entrance gates, set within a stone splay and protected by an attractive lodge house, that lead along a gravelled drive to a forecourt in front of the mansion.

Upon my arrival I was greeted by the vendors, a lovely couple who have owned the property for the past 25 years. I was informed how the 9,042 sq ft house was originally built by Richard Grubb during the early part of the 19th century. The Grubbs were a prominent Quaker family with an extensive milling business that included numerous mills dotted along the river Suir and a large mill within Cahir town.

Four impressive Corinthian columns guard the front door of the house. The spacious entrance hall leads into a modern kitchen which overlooks the well-maintained back gardens. Off the kitchen is a large dining room with four large bay windows that allow plenty of light. Also located on the first floor are a drawing room and a snug sitting room.

A carved timber staircase leads up to the second floor where the master bedroom is situated, along with a further three bedrooms and an upstairs study which features a private bar.

The house also has an extensive basement that’s in excellent condition which contains a large fifth bedroom, wine cellar, games room and boot room.

French doors in the basement lead out to the sunken garden, an intimate terraced garden with an ornamental pond.

From here we took the short walk across to the enclosed cut-stone farmyard which features nine stables, an old coach house and a number of stores and workshops.

Just beside the farmyard is a guest annex where the property’s caretaker resided over the years. The house comprises some 1,345 sq ft and includes a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Cahir Abbey House is a wonderful parkland estate with loads of character and appeal. The mature trees all around the gates and boundary walls of the property means the house is completely hidden from view of the road, which offers any buyer the utmost privacy.

The house is for sale by private treaty at an asking price of €1.25m. The sale is being handled by Sherry Fitzgerald. CL
