Some 56,000 farmers, accounting for one-third of all farms in the state, are to benefit from the roll-out of the National Broadband Plan which was signed off on this week.

The plan, which could cost up to €3bn, will see high-speed broadband brought to all parts of rural Ireland. Work will begin in eight weeks with a planned completion date by 2026.

Minister for Communications Richard Bruton said: “By guaranteeing high-speed broadband for every home, business and farm in the country, we are ensuring no one is left behind.”

Minister Bruton said broadband would open up opportunites for “smart farming”.
