Sales at Carrick returned to action over the weekend and despite the strict restrictions, it was still positive to see. Prospective buyers were allowed to view all of the bulls on offer ahead of the sale and all bidding was done online.

Those logged in online also got to witness the bull moving in the ring, with auctioneer Francis McGowan in the background.

Like many online sales over the past few months, the clearance rate took a massive hit compared with those of a live auction. The Charolais breed made up the most of these nine sales, with eight selling to an average price of €2,400.

Top call

The top of these was a call of €2,900 for Cloonflower Ollie. Bred and exhibited by Irene Foley, this October 2018-born bull is a son of Cavelands Fenian, with Prime Roberto and Pirate also in the back breeding. Ollie boasted five stars on both the terminal and replacement indices, with a beef cow calving figure of only 4.9%.

Just behind this and securing a price of €2,800 was Theforge Pablo from Dermot O’Dowd, Boyle, Co Roscommon. This 16-month-old bull was again the cross of Cavelands Fenian on a Prime Roberto cow.

Pablo carried four stars on the replacement index and five stars on the terminal, with a calving figure of 6%.

Next in line was Michael Kavanagh, who sold his bull Aislinne Orgi at €2,600.

This was yet another Cavelands Fenian son, while the dam’s lineage this time contained Doonally New and Pirate. Born in May 2018, Orgi carried five stars on the terminal index across all breeds.

Local breeder

At €2,500, local breeder Michael Reynolds sold Bunnymore Pepsi.

This January 2019-born bull is a son of the famous Pirate, while the homebred dam is out of Lisnagre Hansome.

Pepsi ranked four stars on the terminal index with a calving figure of 8.1%.

The second round of the May Carrick bull sales takes place on Saturday 16 May, with Angus and Hereford bulls on offer. The same restrictions and procedures will again be in place.

The Irish Angus Cattle Society hosted its inaugural sale in Cashel on Friday, with trade topping at €2,700. The sale was initially planned as a live auction, but ended up as a private tender sale due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This meant that buyers brought their bulls to the sale, but left the grounds with a reserve on their bull, with the auctioneer selling the bulls to perspective buyers from the pen.

In total, 35 bulls attended out of the 42 catalogued, with 13 meeting trade. These 13 bulls saw an average price of €2,300.

Top price

Securing the top price of €2,700 was Tom Mulligan’s Clooncarne Solar Eclipse.

Sale topper in Cashel Clooncarne Solar Eclipse sold for €2,700.

This 12-month-old bull was sired by Rawburn Boss Hogg and is out of former female all-Ireland champion Clooncarne Jenny.

Solar Eclipse carried five stars on both the terminal and replacement indices, with a calving figure of just 1.9% for beef cows. Securing the sale-topper was Paul McMahon of the Sunlodge herd in Co Limerick.

Drumcrow Rio Grande sold for the second joint top price in Cashel of €2,650.

Frank McKiernan sold his two bulls for the second-top price of €2,650 each, both of which were secured by Britton Farms Ltd. Drumcrow Rio Grande is a September 2018-born bull sired by the herd’s successful stock bull Drumcrow Joker, while the second, Drumcrow Ring of Fire, is a son of Portauns Volcano.

Both of these bulls carried cow calving difficulty figures of only 1.6%.

Next in line were Brendan and Edel McCawley, who sold Newbridge Randy for €2,575. This Lannigan Red Lombard son was born in June 2018 and genomically tested five stars on the replacement and four stars on the terminal indices.

Munster branch

The Munster branch of the Irish Angus Cattle Society hosted its sale the following day, with 10 of the 22 bulls put forward meeting trade. Prices topped at €2,500, while the average settled at €2,240. Breeder of the top lot, Greenvalley Rob, was Pat Carmody, Ballybunion, Co Kerry. This May 2018-born son of Mogeely Joe is out of a homebred Rosemead Karona cow. He boasted four stars on the dairy beef index with a calving figure of 2%.
