Speaking at the Rural Economy Committee meeting in the Scottish Parliament, Jo O’Hara, head of Forestry Commission Scotland, confirmed that they have approved applications for over 10,000ha of tree plantations this year.
This will allow the Government to exceed its target of planting 10,000ha, having planted only 7,100ha last year.
The increased planting is likely to continue into next year, as there are already 9,500ha of woodland applications submitted, according to O’Hara.

The 10,000ha target is planned to rise by 50% to 15,000ha in 2025.
Rural Economy Minister Fergus Ewing MSP also stated at the committee meeting that the current £46m budget may need to be revised upwards to increase plantings.
Confor, a timber industry representative body, estimates hitting planting targets will cost an extra £15m/year.
