Still in its maiden year, Killann/Shercock Men’s Shed has already built up a loyal following of 15 members. Irish Country Living chatted with founding member Margaret O’Reilly, who recalls how the shed was set up.

“Although we only set up last September, the idea for a Men’s Shed has been in motion for much longer.

"We wanted to set up a place where men could meet, chat, have a cup of tea and learn new things from one another.

"Peter O’Reilly and Paddy O’Leary really helped push this idea, and so the dream soon became a reality.

"We got the word out to men in the area and held a number of meetings to see what we could do. Immediately we could see that there was interest.”

Finding a suitable premises was difficult but the group were delighted to be offered the use of a vacant house belonging to a neighbour Fiona Marron’s late parents.

“We are very grateful for Fiona’s generosity and for the support, and also the donations and good wishes we received from locals in the area.”

For some it’s just for a weekly catch up, some love learning new skills but for others the shed is a lifeline

The Killann/Shercock group held a very successful open day and before Christmas they had a very popular cards night.

The shed currently opens every Tuesday evening and the group are always trying new things.

“We have walking football every week in the local sports hall which is great exercise and fun.

"This spring we hope to get a vegetable garden set up and we are working on projects for the upcoming Cavan-Monaghan Showcase event, so there is lots to do.”

Margaret has no doubt that the shed is really having a positive effect on their community.

“For some it’s just for a weekly catch up, some love learning new skills but for others the shed is a lifeline. We have a saying here, you’re never too old to learn if you’re not too proud to be taught.”

The shed is located at Tullybrick, Shercock and new members are always warmly welcomed. For more information check out their Facebook page or contact Peter on 0876485340 or Paddy on 0877871588.
