The trade for a larger than expected entry of over 1,050 lambs in Tullow Mart on Tuesday was solid from start to finish, with the majority selling in a brisk trade.
Wholesale buyers dominated the trade, with demand boosted by the upcoming Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha and sale values trending well ahead of equivalent factory prices.
A handful of pens of lambs weighing from 54kg to 60kg topped the sale in terms of overall prices paid, ranging from €240 to €248 per head. There was also another 10 odd batches weighing from 50kg to 52kg, and prices here ranged in the main from €234 to €241 per head.
Close to 25% of lambs on offer weighed from 47kg to 49kg, with a remarkably even trade for such lots. Prices ranged in the main from €227 to €236, and an average price per kilo of about €4.80/kg. Likewise, lambs weighing 44kg to 46kg were consistent in quality and price, with almost another 40% of lambs traded selling from €221 to €229 and averaging at over €5/kg liveweight.
A smaller percentage of lambs weighing 42kg to 43kg sold from €206 to €221, with a wider differential in quality evident.
This was also true of lighter lots weighing 39kg to 41kg, with prices averaging at around the €204 mark, ranging as wide as €193 to €233 but generally from €200 to €205. Lots weighing 38kg sold from €187 to €191, with 37kg lambs trading around €172 per head.
Hogget prices were up on previous weeks, with those weighing 50kg to 57kg selling from €210 to €230 on average, with a few batches of plainer-quality types back to €190 and likewise a few batches of ewe hoggets selling to €250 plus per head.
Cull ewes were steady, with some heavy ewes weighing 95kg to 105kg selling from €230 to €250, while 85kg to 90kg ewes sold from €220 to €230 and lighter lots sold from €2/kg to €2.35/kg on average.
