There has been no real change in the trade for finished lambs this week.

A high percentage of lambs weighing in the region of 50kg to 53kg are trading from €164 to €170/head.

A selection of better-quality and heavier lambs are topping €170/head and rising to €175/head on occasion, while, at the other end of the price range, some crossbred lambs and lambs lacking flesh are trading back to €160/head.

The trade for good-quality store lambs is holding steady in the main, although some mart managers have reported averages easing by 5c/kg to 8c/kg.

A number of managers have commented that this is possibly being influenced by lambs of more variable quality coming on stream.

A high percentage of stores are falling within a price range of €3.25/kg to €3.40/kg, with some batches containing ewe lambs with breeding potential continuing to rise to €3.60/kg to €3.80/kg and upwards of €4/kg for top-quality ewe lambs.

The trade for plainer-quality types and light lambs which are a long-term prospect has eased by upwards of 10c/kg.

The general run of prices here is €3/kg to €3.20/kg for poorer-quality lots, with better-quality types continuing to sell to €3.40/kg to €3.50/kg for lambs around 30kg liveweight.

A number of mart managers are reporting more bite in the trade for cull ewes. Fleshed good-quality heavier ewes weighing from 85kg to 95kg are trading from €2.15/kg to €2.30/kg, with small numbers of top-quality lots over this.

A similar price is being paid for lighter fleshed ewes, with feeding ewes averaging around the €2/kg to €2.10/kg mark for younger lots.

Ewes lacking significant flesh are selling back to €1.50/kg, while hill ewes are selling anywhere from €1/kg to €1.40/kg for light carcase ewes, rising to €1.60/kg to €1.70/kg-plus for heavier ewes.

Hoggets numbers have dropped off significantly, but there is still keen demand for better-quality types.

The general run of prices ranges from €220 to €280/head for good-quality types, with lighter-framed hoggets with a poor weight for age selling back to €150 to €160 in smaller numbers.
