Last Thursday evening’s sale at Ballymote Mart saw another strong trade for lambs. Prices were said to be a few euro back on the previous week. Mart manager Stephen Hannon said that farmer buyers were happy in the main with prices received and a high clearance rate was achieved.
Store lambs under 40kg sold from €44 to €46 over the weight. Those from 40kg to 45kg sold mainly from €55 to €63 over, while those from 45kg to 50kg sold mainly from €57 to €67 over. Heavier lambs sold up to €60 over.
Stephen said that cull ewes made from €60 to €100, with exceptional lots selling from €100 to €120/head.

Stephen said that the trade for cattle on the day was also particularly strong. He said that there were plenty of buyers for all quality lots on the day. Bullocks over 400kg were said to be a very strong trade, with average-quality types selling for €600 on average along with the weight and top-quality types making as much as €750 along with the weight.
A similar trend was evident in the heifer ring, with heavy types making up to €750 over the weight, with average-quality lots making about €600 over the weight.
Commission rates are €9 to the buyer and 2% to the seller along with a €2 entry fee up to a maximum charge of €22.
