Well-known country drummer and vocalist Brian “Barney” Mullen (49) died suddenly at the weekend, at his home in Sion Mills, Co Tyrone.

Brian played with some of the leading Irish country singers, including Dominic Kirwan, Stephen Smyth, Jason McGilligan and numerous combinations.

News of his passing came as a huge shock to the country fraternity, where Brian was so well-known and respected over the years.

The Mullan family has a long association with the country scene. Brian’s father, Billy, was a drummer with Gene Stuart’s band, The Homesteaders, for several years.

Stephen Smyth was among those leading the tributes.

“Today, we not only lost a member of our band, but a good friend and colleague to so many of you out there. Brian Mullen was one the finest drummers and singers I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Thoughts and prayers go out to all his family at this very sad time,” said Stephen Smyth.

Paddy Hunter, country music commentator in the Ulster region, said Brian was called upon to set the beat for not only live bands, but numerous studio albums as well.

“He was a driving force behind many American country nights throughout the northwest. His son Bryan is also a great new talent on the circuit.

“Brian was a fine vocalist and was always on the wanted list when it came to drums or harmonies. He had a sweet voice and was a larger than life character with a witty yarn or two for good measure. He was shaped in the old showband era and for those of us who knew him and worked with him, our lives have been enriched by the experience of knowing Barney.”

Gene Stuart, a family friend for years, said it was sad news from Sion Mills. “Brian was a very fine singer and one of the top drummers in the whole country. He was a good lad too.”

Condolences are tendered to the Mullen family on their sad bereavement.
