The Mullingar agricultural show has being running for over 180 years, and the walled garden where the livestock are kept has being a huge attraction in recent years. This year proved no different, with 200 cattle there to compete for their respective breed championships as well as the coveted interbreed title.

This year’s glory went to Martin Mooney’s rising two-year-old Simmental heifer Tisaran Her Majesty. Having come out on top in the Simmental section, she drew the eye of most of the judges when they came together. Tisaran Her Majesty is no stranger to winning, having claimed senior heifer champion at the breed society’s national calf show last year. Sired by Curaheen Wakeman, the September 2017-born heifer is out of show cow Fearna Faith.

Reserve supreme interbreed was the Limousin champion Galloway Monika from Michael and Paul McKiernan. This October 2017-born heifer was sired by Ballinloan Jaegerbomb while the dam is Ampertaine Commander daughter Galloway Hazel.

Angus

In the Angus ring, overall champion went to John McEnroe's four-year-old cow Liss Minree M415. Sired by former stock bull The Moss Ethelorance, she was shown alongside her March-born calf. Reserve went to Michael and Oliver Flanagan’s senior heifer Moydrum Natasha, a daughter of Bohey Jasper.

Charolais

Overall Charolais champion went to father and son duo John and Desmond Boyd for their home-bred heifer Faus Nevada. Sired by Liscally Eti, this heifer was a regular on last year’s show circuit, cumulating in a win at the Charolais National show in Tullamore. John Barry Moran picked up the reserve spot with his September 2017-born bull Brocca Napolean. This stylish bull's sire is Texan Gi, while the dam is out of Jupiter.

Hereford

The Hereford ring was ruled by Michael Molloy's bull Moyclare Quinlan. Sired by Churchill Nigel, this stylish 11-month-old bull has already claimed an interbreed title at Fingal show. Reserve championship honours went to Tom and Anselm Fitzgerald for their young bull Grianan Poll 1 Tell. Sired by AI bull Solpoll Kentucky Kid, this marked the stylish May 2017-born bull's first day out.

Reserve Simmental

Second to the interbreed champion in the Simmental ring was Ballykin Jessie from Denis and Conor O’Meara. This March 2017-born heifer is by stock bull Bighill Geovani and has picked up a number of top prizes to date, including first and reserve champion at Tralee and a first at Charleville.

Reserve Limousin

Martin Davis continued his good run in the Limousin ring, claiming reserve Limousin champion with Mount Everest ET. This bull picked up the interbreed calf title at Athlone and the Limousin champion at Longford the two previous weekends. This one is sired by Trueman Jagger and out of a Vantastic bred dam.

Commercial

Claiming the male championship and male beef to heel title was Jason Teague with his Limousin cross bullock Charlie. This bullock also has a glittering show career, claiming the all-Ireland beef bullock title last year at Strokestown show. Sired by TVR, he is out of a Belgian blue bred cow.

In the female section, John Hegarty was out in front with his Liscally Eti bred heifer Alexis. This heifer also went on to claim the hotly contested beef to heel female section and was champion at Longford last weekend.
