It was another busy day at the 101st Clogher Valley Show, with hundreds of cattle paraded. Part of the show this year for the first time was the Northern Ireland Aberdeen Angus summer championships.

These championships proved very rewarding for young breeder Jack Smyth, who went on to claim the overall title under judge Angela MacGregor.

His three-year-old cow Glen Cowie Jackie Erica F096 ticked all the boxes for the Scottish judge, saying her and her calf were “a tremendous working unit”.

Sired by Scotsmill Enigma L073, she was shown alongside her January-born bull calf, who later in the day secured the junior male championship. No stranger to the show ring, Jackie Erica placed top of the line in the junior cow class at this year’s Balmoral Show.

Taking the reserve overall Aberdeen Angus championship was Denamona Princess Caroline. Bred and exhibited by Tyrone-based Moses Irwin, this 14-month-old heifer also claimed the junior female title.

Sired by Netherton Mr Brazilian, she goes back on the well-known Princess Caroline line at Blelack. Commenting on her champion, MacGregor said she is “an all-round super heifer that moves beautifully in the ring”.

In the males, the senior championship went the way of Banbridge breeder Freddie Davison with Ember Daniel U402.

This January 2018-born bull is sired by Cheeklaw Edgar R515 and is out of Hallington Endeavour daughter Ember Delia M654. This young bull was also successful at Balmoral Show taking a red rosette in the junior male class.

Just behind the senior champion in the class was Lana Elber U414 from Alan Cheney, Trillick, Co Tyrone. This bull followed the champion all the way to the end to be awarded the reserve senior male championship also.

This young bull is homebred on both sides and goes back to the successful Elba line.

As mentioned, securing the junior male championship was the January 2019-born son of the champion from Jack Smyth.

Along with winning in the Charolais ring, the Portadown-based Matchett family was also successful in the Angus ring.

Taking the reserve senior championship to the overall champion was their two-year-old junior cow Birches Lady Holly T301. Shown alongside her heifer calf, she also claimed the 2019 Ulster provincial trophy in Antrim earlier that week.
