Sligo Hunt Pony Club came up with a unique twist on social distancing over the midterm break when they held a virtual Halloween ‘Spooky Dress’ competition. The members were very imaginative as they decorated themselves and their ponies with the most scary, ghoulish outfits. They then sent in photos and videos of their spooky masterpieces to be judged by Irish International Showjumper Cian O’Connor. Cian had a very difficult time choosing the winners but eventually settled on the following:
U10s – 1st prize went to Lula Hughes as a Spooky Ghost Rider. Over 10s – Joint first went to Ellen O’Hara as Cruela De Vil with her Dalmatian pony, and Mia Gately (pictured) as a vampire riding her Evil Unicorn.
Moloney storms ahead in $100,000 Grand Prix
Kilkenny native Richie Moloney and Merqusio, who is owned by Equinimity LLC, landed an impressive win in last Sunday’s (8 November) two-star Grand Prix in South Carolina, USA.
Just four combinations jumped clear in the opening round to make it into the jump-off, with Moloney double handed against the clock after he produced two clear rounds with Merqusio and Button Sitte. Moloney crossed the line clear in 37.26 seconds in the second round with Merqusio to take the win.
Afterwards Moloney said: “Merqusio jumped really well, he always does, keeping it nice and smooth. This [the $100,000 1.45m FEI Grand Prix] was the aim all week with both horses.”
In European competition, two Irish riders scored runner-up finishes in Grand Prix classes on Sunday afternoon. Meath’s Alexander Butler and the Irish Sport Horse Pico finished second in the three-star Grand Prix at Vilamoura in Portugal. Pico is by Chekhov PZK (OLD) out of Da Soffer (AES) and was bred by Norman Allen in Co Westmeath.
Tipperary’s Shane Breen finished fifth with the Carmel Ryan-owned and bred stallion Compelling Z while Brazil’s Eduardo Pereira De Menezes took victory with H5 Chaganus.
At Valencia in Spain, Galway girl Jessica Burke and the Irish Sport Horse Express Trend, owned and bred by Liam Nicholas, finished second in the 1.50m three-star Grand Prix.
