The ESB has reported that thousands of customers have been left without electricity as Storm Eleanor sweeps across Ireland.

Large power faults have been reported in Donegal and Mayo, while customers in Cavan and Leitrim have also been left without power for a number of hours.

The status orange weather warning is in place until 10pm on 2 January, with gusts of wind predicted to reach speeds of 110km/h to 130km/h in Connacht, Munster and Leinster.

Met Éireann has also issued an orange wind warning in place for Cavan and Monaghan, and says there is a risk of flooding along the Atlantic coast.

The ESB has informed customers that they expect the faults to be repaired this evening, but farmers will be concerned if power is not restored in time for morning milking.

Road conditions are treacherous and there are widespread reports of fallen trees and debris across roads. People are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary journeys.
