The sale at Balla Mart on Saturday saw another large entry of bullocks, heifers, cull cows and in-calf heifers pass through the three rings.

In addition to the usual sale, there was a special entry of in-calf heifers and a charity sale for UCD’s Ag-Soc. The bullock ring saw another good trade for good quality types. Heavy bullocks over 600kg sold from €2.05/kg to €2.25/kg for good quality types. Bullocks from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg, top quality U grades sold from €2.45/kg to €2.60/kg.

Light bullocks from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €2.25/kg to €2.40/kg for average quality types, while the top third made from €2.45/kg to over €2.65/kg.

Heifers

Heifers remain a slightly poorer trade than steers. Heifer over 600kg sold from €2.00/kg to €2.20/kg for average quality types, top quality types in the same weight range sold to over €2.40/kg.

Heifers from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €2.05/kg to €2.30/kg with top quality lots on the day selling to over €2.40/kg with the very top price at €2.60/kg. Lighter heifers from 400kg to 500kg saw stronger prices of €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg for average quality types while the top third made from €2.60/kg to over €2.80/kg. Angus from the dairy herd and Friesians made from €1.80/kg to €2.20/kg.

An entry of in-calf heifers were met with strong demand. Many top lots sold in up to €2,400, while the main demand on the day saw these top quality strong December calving heifers sell from €1,800 to €2,100.
