The continued growth of our global population has lead to an increased world demand for milk and milk products. The dairy world market increases by 15 billion litres every year, however European countries have seen a decline in consumption levels. Ireland, like its fellow European countries has seen its dairy market come under increasing pressure, however the National Dairy Council is tackling this problem head on.
Milk Consumption

A dip in dairy consumption has been attributed to lifestyle changes, which are thought to be driven by myths and misconceptions on dairy, fed through social and mainstream media. Increased soft drink consumption and a decreased dairy intake in today’s teenagers, as well as drop in milk consumption at breakfast, are all thought to contribute to the decline.
NDC invest €900,000 to increase dairy consumption
The National Dairy Council (NDC) is working in support of Irelands Dairy Farmers to promote Irish dairy products. Their most recent campaign video ‘Milk Moments’ illustrates how Irelands love for milk fits in with our busy lives (with the aim to further consumption levels). The video is part of a three year €14 Million campaign, targeted at EU countries which import and consume Irish dairy products. €0.9 Million of the fund is dedicated to the Irish market, to increase our national dairy consumption.
The National Dairy Council continues to work on behalf of Ireland’s Dairy Farmers to drive a sustainable dairy industry in Ireland. The ‘Milk Moments’ campaign, like other National Dairy Council projects is aimed to educate customers on the role of dairy in their lifestyles. The NDC maintains campaigns to bust the myths and misconceptions on dairy, and inform the public on the benefits of dairy products.
Milk is an important source of vitamins and minerals (a 100ml glass of milk contains calcium, protein, iodine, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin & vitamin B12) and we should drink milk every day as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Although traditionally the majority of milk is drunk at breakfast, nutritionists say that you can enjoy milk at anytime of the day! –What’s your Milk Moment?
