Some 26 farmers, three agricultural contractors and one agricultural machinery dealer have been charged penalties in the latest tax defaulters list, which runs from 1 October 2017 to 31 December 2017.

A farmer in Waterford is facing a €253,950.69 bill from Revenue, after a Revenue Audit Case found that there had been an under-declaration of income tax, with the farmer ordered to pay €119,643.82 in tax, €44,574 in interest and €89,732.87 in penalties.

The farmer, who is named as Michael A. Carlton from Villierstown, Co Waterford, is recorded on the most recent tax defaulters list as a farmer and publican, and had a remaining €181,049.69 left to pay at the end of December.

Penalties

There were 227 people who were also charged penalties relating to sums of money for the under-declaration or non-declaration of tax.

The average sum paid by 21 farmers who fell into this category was €1,250 for failure to lodge income tax returns.

The highest penalty was imposed by a court to John Mullane, Killoughteen, Newcastlewest, Co Limerick, who received a €14,099.40 penalty for under-declaration of income tax and capital gains tax to the tune of €36,968.59.

Green diesel

In total, five farmers were charged penalties for driving vehicles with green diesel.

The average penalty charged by Revenue was €2,500, which was the sum paid by four out of the five farmers.

The highest penalty paid by a farmer for driving with green diesel was €3,000, which Sean Cousins, 14 Riverchapel Close, Courtown, Co Wexford was ordered to pay to Revenue.
