Three new varieties have come on to the 2015 winter cereal recommended lists – two barleys and one wheat.
The winter wheat is KWS Lili and the two barley varieties are KWS Infinity and the hybrid six-row Quadra. All the new varieties come on with provisional recommendation.
On the winter barley list, Saffron has been dropped and KWS Tower is now fully recommended. The recommended varieties and their relative yields are KWS Cassia (98), KWS Tower (103), Leibniz (102), Volume (109), KWS Infinity (102) and Quadra (110). The two hybrids, Volume and Quadra, are visibly higher-yielding than the two-row varieties, but Tower and Infinity now equal or exceed the standard six-row, Leibniz. The two new varieties have a good package of agronomic characteristics but Quadra is a bit more prone to straw breakdown.
Three winter wheat varieties have been dropped – the clean SY Epson, the long-serving Cordial and even longer-serving Einstein. Leeds and Weaver remain provisionally recommended. The recommended varieties and their relative yields are Avatar (100), Dunmore (97), JB Diego (100), KWS Lumos (97), KWS Lili (100), Leeds (98) and Weaver (101).
KWS Lili has good agronomic characteristics and is regarded as a bread wheat. While Weaver and Leeds were provisionally recommended last year, it seems Weaver’s straw and Leeds’s susceptibility to mildew may have prevented their full recommendation this time.
The winter oat variety list has no changes, but the yield ratings differ slightly. The recommended varieties and their yield ratings are Barra (95), Husky (105) and Vodka (98). In the previous list, the yield difference between Barra and Husky was 12 points and the true winter variety Vodka was also two points higher than on this list.
