Brendan O’Gorman from Castletownroche in Co Cork is the Goldcrop 2015 Quality Seed Grower Award winner. The announcement was made on Tuesday at a ceremony which also acknowledged a range of winners in different seed crop categories. Brendan won the winter barley south award with a crop of KWS Tower which yielded 4.86 t/ha at 19.2% moisture and 66.4KPH. He also received an award for a crop of Mickle spring barley which yielded 3.86 t/ha. He has been growing seed crops for 40 years and he grows forage maize for sale, seed barley and malting barley.

Individual category winners were also announced for the southern (S) and northern (N) supply regions. The winter barley crop winners were Bernard Quinn (N) and Brendan O’Gorman (S); spring barley winners were Declan Heaney (N) and Christy and Kathleen Ring (S); oat award winners were Donal Hartford (N) and Clifford Roe (S); and the wheat winners were Alan Bothwell (N) and Michael and Seamus Kearney (S).

Goldcrop’s Donal Fitzgerald said the awards are a recognition of the dedication of its seed growers. He said these grower awards are a celebration of the high calibre of growers and a recognition of the genetic improvement in all crops.
