The last of the Midland and Western Livestock improvement society spring sales took place in Carrick-on-Shannon over the weekend. The multi-breed sale saw a 60% clearance rate, with trade peaking at €5,600.

Leading the way was the Angus bull Lawsons Ford Real McCoy from Michael and Barry Smith, Cootehill, Co Cavan. This March 2017-born bull is a son of the herd’s former stock bull Friarstown Evolver, with the dam going back to Roose Ulah-bred dam. This bull carried five stars on the terminal index, with a calving index of 3.7%.

There was a big gap to the next Angus top price, which was €3,100 for Farmhill Ryan. This young bull is a son of Kingsbury Moonshine and was bred by James Regan, Farm Hill, Loughglynn, Co Roscommon.

A total of 26 Angus bulls traded hands on the day, with average price settling at €2,000.

The Charolais trade was up on this, with 26 selling to average €2,700. Topping the Charolais trade was a call of €5,000 for Annadale Oliver. This Crossmolina Euro son was brought out by John T Morrow, Loughros Point, Donegal.

Just behind this at €4,900 was Carrowquill Oltan from local breeder Dermot Foley. Oltan is a son of Tonroe Eminem.

Rooskeynamona Oisin was the next bull to breach the €4,000 mark when auctioneer Francis McGowan knocked him down at €4,450.

Bred by Mohill breeder Gerard Mulligan, Oisin is sired by the homebred Rooskeynamona Jockey.

Taking home a price of €4,050 was Tony O’Donnell, Elphin with Summervilla Oscar, a Cavelands Fenian son.
