The Toyota Hilux has undergone major updates for 2021, both inside and more noticeably outside, with heavily revised styling.

The new models have a 3D-style grille and front bumper. There are also new LED lights front and rear. Two new colour options will be offered, orange spice and oxide bronze, with the option of 18in alloy wheels.

Similar to the 2021 Land Cruiser, there is a more powerful engine option. A new Euro 6d-compliant 2.8l four-cylinder engine offering 201bhp at 3,400rpm.

Coupled with the six-speed automatic gearbox, it delivers 500Nm of torque, while the manual gearbox offers 420Nm. The firm also says a new heavy-duty turbocharger has been fitted alongside other subtle engine modifications to improve performance.

The 1t payload and 3.5t towing capacity has been expanded to all 4wd body types, including single-cab models. The engine is also said to be quieter from inside the cabin.

The entertainment system has been enhanced with a new 8in tablet-style touchscreen standard on the SR5 and Invincible models. It also benefits from improved software, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Suspension and steering are said to have been tweaked to improve handling and comfort. Retuned shock absorbers and leaf springs are said to also have improved ride quality.

Updates to improve off-road handling have been added too, with a new electronic function added to 4wd models to replicate the effect of a mechanical limited slip differential and to improve traction. Engine idle speed is reduced from 850rpm to 680rpm. Throttle response is said to be also improved.

Top-of-the-range Invincible models feature what Toyota calls a more adventurous look to its more everyday counterparts.

This is signalled by the more pronounced front and rear over-fenders, door mirrors and handles, alongside the black alloy wheels and bespoke invincible-stamped tailgate.

Inside the cabin, there are dual-tone leather seats and unique Invincible instruments alongside other subtle differences to set the flagship model apart.

Pricing starts from €24,258 ex-VAT. Models are said to go on sale early in 2021.
