Toyota Ireland has confirmed that it has put in place a Customer Satisfaction Campaign for owners of Hilux 4x4 pick-ups whose vehicles have experienced chassis failure issues during routine service inspections and also during commercial vehicle roadworthiness test (CVRT) inspections.

This programme will include Toyota Ireland covering the full costs associated with the replacement of the ladder chassis of the vehicle and providing documentation to that effect, where it is deemed necessary, on a case by case basis.

Toyota Ireland has confirmed to the Irish Farmers Journal that this Customer Satisfaction Campaign will expire on September 30, 2028, or 12 years from the vehicle’s date of first registration, whichever occurs first.

The campaign includes all Toyota Hilux vehicles that have been first registered in Ireland and any other country, since September 2013. The cut-off date is a moving date based on the 12th anniversary of the Toyota Hilux first registration.

This is important because owners of these vehicles, who have any doubts about the chassis frame integrity and safety of their vehicle, need to visit their local Toyota dealer, as a matter of urgency to arrange for a vehicle inspection to be carried out within this time frame.

This is unusual in that the inclusion of a Toyota Hilux 4x4 into this specific Customer Satisfaction Campaign is not solely based on the serial number or vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle, instead it is based on a rolling 12 years since its first registration in any country, including Britain.

This means that if you are the owner of a Toyota Hilux that was registered in January 2014, and since, you will need to visit your Toyota dealer in advance of that date in order that your vehicle will be included in the chassis replacement programme as part of the Customer Satisfaction Campaign.

It is known from CVRT chassis failure rate data received earlier this year from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) that between 2020 and 2024, there were 5,131 CVRTs carried out on Toyota Hilux 4x4 vehicles, of which 1,280 were carried out in 2024.

It can be estimated that a significant number of these may be eligible for the Customer Satisfaction Campaign for owners of Toyota Hilux 4x4 pick-up vehicles.

This issue is distinct from normal surface rust

Irish Farmers Journal asked Toyota Ireland to give responses to questions based on this chassis issue and the Customer Satisfaction Campaign for the Toyota Hilux 4x4 pick-up. Toyota Ireland said: “These vehicles may have a chassis frame that does not provide sufficient corrosion-resistant protection for prolonged use in certain environments and conditions. When combined with extended exposure to road salts and other severe environmental factors, this could lead to excessive corrosion in the frame of some vehicles, potentially resulting in chassis frame perforation. This issue is distinct from normal surface rust. Importantly, this condition should be identified during the annual CVRT inspection.

“Owners are advised to contact any Toyota dealer to confirm whether their vehicle is within the affected range. Toyota dealers will then inspect the frame and judge remedy accordingly. The remedy will be performed at no charge to vehicle owners,” the statement added.

The affected Toyota Hilux 4x4 models are in Table 1, so please check with your dealer and check vehicle registration details.
